Quick answer
For a family trip, every traveller, including children, needs insurance. All travellers can be listed in one group document if the insurer supports this format, or they can receive separate policies. The main requirement is that every person is clearly listed as an insured person.
The policy must be valid from the day of entry until the day of departure, cover health and accidents in Georgia, and have a total insured amount of at least 30 000 GEL. The document can be presented electronically, but it must be available in English or Georgian.
For a child, it is especially important to check not only the entry requirement but also the actual assistance available. Check how the insurer arranges a doctor's visit, hospitalisation, emergency dental treatment, and communication with the parent.
How to insure the whole family
Start with a list of all travellers and the documents the family will use to cross the border. Enter the first and last names in Latin characters exactly as they appear in the documents. Do not use a different spelling of the name if it differs from the passport.
If the child is included in a parent's document or travels with a separate passport, use exactly the document that will be presented upon entry. Under GPI's terms, documents relating to a minor include the birth certificate, the child's passport, and the passport of one of the parents. The specific set of documents required for purchase or reimbursement is best confirmed with the insurer.
After payment, download each policy. In a family document, check all family members one by one. An error affecting only one child should not go unnoticed simply because the adults' details are correct.
- make a list of all travellers;
- check the spelling against the passports;
- check the dates of birth;
- check the document numbers;
- make sure every person is listed as insured;
- save all PDFs in one offline folder.
How to choose the dates
Each family member's insurance must cover their entire actual stay in Georgia. If one parent arrives earlier and the child arrives later, the dates may be different. Do not copy the same period for everyone until you have checked the tickets.
The arrival day and departure day are included in the coverage period. A night flight can easily cause a mistake: a departure before midnight and a border crossing after midnight fall on different calendar dates.
If the trip is extended, new coverage should be arranged before the existing coverage expires. For a GPI policy purchased while already in Georgia, the official page states that activation begins after 24 hours. Extending the policy at the last minute may result in an actual gap in coverage.
What to check for a child
A basic travel insurance policy is designed for sudden illness or an accident. It does not become a programme for routine medical monitoring of a child. Vaccinations, regular check-ups, previously scheduled examinations, and treatment of a known condition may not be covered.
Check whether there are age restrictions, a deductible, or separate limits. Find out where to call at night, whether the insurer can direct you to a paediatric clinic, and who approves hospitalisation. These questions are more important than the general statement "children are insured."
If your child takes regular medication, bring a sufficient supply in the original packaging and the doctor's prescription. Do not assume that travel insurance will pay for planned refills. If the child's health suddenly deteriorates, the operator will assess the case according to the contract and medical documents.
If your child becomes ill
Call the medical assistance line stated in the policy. For GPI, this is +995 32 2 505 111. Provide the child's details, policy number, symptoms, address, and the time when the problem began. The operator will advise you on the clinic and payment procedure.
In the event of an immediate threat to life, call 112. State what happened, the exact address, and the caller's name. Then notify the insurer at the first objectively possible opportunity.
Take the child's passport, the parent's identity document, and the policy to the clinic. Keep Form No. 100, prescriptions, examination results, the cost calculation, and receipts. If assistance is provided at a non-partner clinic, GPI requires the reimbursement documents to be submitted within 30 days.
Common family mistakes
The most common problem is that the policy is issued only for the adult who paid for the order. The person who pays and the insured person are not always the same. Check the list of insured persons, not the name of the bank card holder.
The second mistake is taking the dates from the hotel booking even though the flight arrives earlier or departs later. The third is storing the PDF only in one parent's email when that parent has no connection or their phone runs out of battery.
Another common mistake is going to the nearest clinic without calling the insurer. This is justified in a life-threatening situation, but under ordinary circumstances, failure to notify the insurer may affect the reimbursement. Save the assistance number on both adults' phones.
- do not confuse the payer with the insured person;
- do not shorten the coverage period to the number of hotel nights;
- do not leave a child out of the group list;
- do not keep the documents on only one device;
- do not start planned treatment without checking the coverage;
- do not lose the original medical documents.
Family checklist
Before the trip, check each person separately: passport, dates, territory, risks, and insured amount. Create a shared folder with all policies and a separate note containing the assistance phone numbers. The adults should know where the documents are stored and who will contact the insurer.
Insurance reduces financial risk but does not replace ordinary preparation. Bring any medicines the family regularly uses, medical records for important diagnoses, and consent for the child's travel if it is required for your route and family circumstances.
