Short answer
Do not wait for automatic renewal. If the insurer does not offer a separate amendment to the existing contract, continuation is usually arranged as a new policy for the next period.
Check the exact end time of the current document and purchase the new one in advance. For the GPI product purchased while already in Georgia, the official page states that coverage starts 24 hours after purchase.
After the new policy is issued, check more than just the dates. The name, passport details, territory, covered risks, and age group must all remain correct. Keep the old document until all possible claims and requests have been completed.
When to start the renewal
Set a reminder at least several days before the policy expires. This gives you enough time to check the terms, correct an error, and account for delayed activation. The exact amount of time needed depends on the insurer and the way the policy is issued.
If the policy expires during your trip or just before a weekend, start even earlier. Do not assume that support will be able to correct a passport number or date immediately on the evening of the last day.
Renewal is not only about meeting a formal requirement. An event that occurs after the old policy has expired and before the new one becomes effective does not fall within either coverage period.
How to align the dates
GPI's terms state that the policy is valid from 00:00 on the start date until 24:00 on the end date. If the old period ends on August 15 at 24:00, the next calendar period should begin on August 16 at 00:00.
When purchasing the policy while already in Georgia, take the GPI product's 24-hour activation period into account. Arrange the new document sufficiently in advance so that its start time is no later than the end of the current coverage.
Do not create unnecessary overlap unless needed, but a small buffer is better than a gap if the activation rules cannot be determined precisely. Ask the insurer to confirm the start time in writing.
Five policy checks
Open the new PDF itself, not just the payment confirmation email. Compare the document with your passport and your travel plans. The check takes only a few minutes and protects you from errors that may be difficult to correct after the policy becomes effective.
- the first and last name are written exactly as in the passport;
- the passport number is up to date;
- the new start date does not leave a gap in coverage;
- the end date covers the planned departure;
- Georgia is included in the territory of coverage;
- the insured amount and covered risks meet the requirements;
- medical assistance contact details are available.
If your passport has changed
A new passport means a new document number. Do not transfer the old details to the next policy for convenience. Use the document that you will use to stay in and leave the country.
If your passport changes after the policy has been purchased, contact the insurer before the new coverage period begins. Whether the policy can be corrected, reissued, or refunded depends on the contract and the stage of the policy period.
The GPI terms allow cancellation and a premium refund before the insurance period begins, subject to the stated commission and any applicable bank charges. The same rules cannot be assumed after the coverage period has started.
If your plans have changed
If you are leaving earlier, do not assume that you will automatically receive a refund for unused days. If you are leaving later, arrange an additional period of coverage before the current one expires. Both situations are governed by the contract.
If a new policy has already been issued with an incorrect date, do not edit the file yourself. Contact the seller or insurer and obtain a new document or written confirmation of the change.
Keep the correspondence, payment receipt, and both versions of the policy. In a dispute, the official sequence of documents is important, not an edited screenshot.
No-gap checklist
Renewal means managing two points in time: the end of the old coverage and the start of the new one. Look not only at the calendar date, but also at the product's activation time.
The optimal sequence is: check the expiry date in advance, arrange the new period, download the PDF, verify the details, and keep both documents. If a condition is unclear, request a written response from the insurer before the relevant date arrives.
