Quick answer
For a long stay in Georgia, mandatory insurance must cover the entire actual period of stay, but no more than one year within a single travel period. If your plans change, arrange new coverage before the existing policy expires.
Travel insurance protects against unexpected events covered by the contract. It does not replace long-term medical insurance for planned consultations, monitoring of chronic conditions, regular tests, or preventive care.
According to the official GPI page, the mandatory travel insurance product is available for periods from 3 to 365 days. The exact dates, age, and activation conditions should be checked in the quotation and the issued policy.
How to calculate the coverage period
Set the date of entry as the start of the coverage period and the date of departure as the end. If the exact departure date is unknown, choose a realistic period and set a reminder to renew the policy in advance. A policy that expires before the actual stay ends leaves the traveller without coverage.
Under GPI's terms, the coverage period begins at 00:00 on the specified date and ends at 24:00 on the last day. For a policy purchased before entering Georgia, coverage is activated when crossing the Georgian border. If purchased while already in Georgia, coverage begins after 24 hours.
This delay is especially important when renewing a policy. Purchasing a new policy on the day the old one expires may create a gap if the new policy is activated only after 24 hours.
What travel insurance covers
Travel insurance is designed for emergency assistance in cases of sudden illness or an accident. GPI lists emergency assistance, urgent outpatient treatment, emergency hospitalisation, emergency dental treatment, medical evacuation, and repatriation.
Each risk has its own conditions. The overall limit of up to 100 000 GEL does not mean that every service will be covered up to that amount. Sub-limits, lists of covered diagnoses, age, and mandatory notification of the insurer are important.
When there are multiple insurance claims, expenses are counted within the overall and individual limits of the policy. A longer coverage period does not reset the limits each month unless the contract expressly states otherwise.
When you need a medical insurance plan
If you live, work, study, or plan to regularly visit doctors in Georgia, consider long-term medical insurance separately. It may include planned consultations, diagnostics, medication, and access to a network of clinics.
The contents of a medical insurance plan depend on the product. Check waiting periods, exclusions for previously diagnosed conditions, referral requirements, and the customer's share of the costs.
Having a local medical insurance plan does not always satisfy the mandatory requirement for travellers. The document must contain the required information, cover health and accidents, specify the territory and dates, and have an insured amount of at least 30 000 GEL.
How to renew without a gap
Start checking the policy a few days before it expires. Find out whether the renewal will be issued as a new policy and when it will become active. Do not rely on automatic continuation simply because your card details were saved during the first purchase.
The new coverage period should begin immediately after the last covered day, taking the activation time into account. After the new policy is issued, compare the new PDF with the old one: the name and passport details must match, and the coverage periods should form a continuous sequence.
Keep both documents. If an insured event occurs around the transition between policies, the insurer needs to be able to determine which policy was valid at the time of the claim.
- check the expiry date and time;
- take into account GPI's 24-hour activation period for policies purchased in Georgia;
- arrange the new coverage period in advance;
- verify the passport details;
- keep both the old and new PDFs;
- update the policy number in your emergency assistance note.
Risks of a long stay
Over several months, plans, passports, addresses, and health conditions are more likely to change. If you receive a new passport, ask the insurer how to update your details. Do not edit the PDF yourself.
Active recreation also requires another check. A summer hike, winter skiing, and ordinary city life may involve different risks. Under GPI's contract, dangerous professional and amateur sports are listed among the exclusions.
Plan chronic treatment separately. Travel insurance may provide only limited emergency assistance in cases of an immediate threat to life, but not regular treatment after the condition has stabilised.
A one-year plan
Create an insurance calendar: start date, expiry date, reminder, and assistance contact. Keep policies by coverage period rather than replacing the old file with a new one under the same name.
Separate the two purposes. Mandatory travel insurance is needed to maintain continuous compliance with the rules for staying in the country and to cover emergency events. A medical insurance plan is intended for everyday medical care. This approach is clearer and reduces the risk of expecting one product to provide coverage that it does not include.
