Before buying another policy, check your existing travel insurance. The aim is to have suitable cover for Georgia and every day of your visit, without paying twice unnecessarily. If you choose GPI, compare the exclusions and when cover starts too.
Three checks before buying
- Does the insurance you already have cover Georgia and all travellers?
- Are your planned holiday activities covered?
- Is the policy available in English or Georgian and does it include every day of your stay?
Visit Georgia offers GPI policies for purchase. This information explains the product; the insurer's terms and your policy determine coverage.
First, check the insurance you already have
If you bought travel insurance in Israel, ask for the policy document in English and check the territory, dates, insured people's names, risks and limits. Having a membership card or access to healthcare in Israel does not by itself establish cover for travelling abroad.
If you have insurance as a credit-card benefit, ask the provider whether it needs activating, how long cover lasts and which family members are included. Do not cancel an existing policy until you understand what will remain covered.
Entry requirements and choosing an insurer
Since 1 January 2026, tourists entering Georgia have been required to hold health and accident insurance, subject to the exemptions in law. The requirement is at least GEL 30,000 of cover for the entire stay, with a paper or electronic document in English or Georgian.
You can consider a policy from an authorised Georgian or foreign insurer. Insurance does not replace checking entry eligibility or guarantee a border-control decision.
City break, mountains or skiing: check the actual activity
Tell the insurer in writing what you actually plan to do: for example, a particular walking route, skiing or an organised activity. Do not simply call it ‘a trip’ or assume that every holiday activity is covered.
GPI's terms include exclusions for hazardous activities, including mountaineering and diving. Medical evacuation requires coordination under the terms and is not the same as unlimited search-and-rescue cover. Check trip cancellation, baggage and pre-existing conditions separately too.
What the GPIH-A programme offers
The programme offered through Visit Georgia has a total insured amount of GEL 100,000 and a GEL 100 deductible. Each type of treatment has its own limits; the overall amount does not guarantee payment for any treatment.
The terms include restrictions relating to pre-existing conditions, pregnancy and age. Above age 75, some benefits are limited to the consequences of an accident. If you are exactly 75, ask GPI for clarification because the age boundary is not worded consistently in the table and contract text. Read the contract before paying.
Flight dates are not always coverage dates
Match the policy to your date of entry into Georgia and your date of departure. For an overnight flight, check whether you arrive the following day. Compare every insured person's name and passport number with the document they will use for the trip.
If you buy GPI before entry, cover starts when you cross the border, within the policy dates. If you buy from inside Georgia, it starts after 24 hours. Receiving a PDF does not remove the waiting period.
Buying, payment and receiving the document
Choose the duration and age, enter the travellers' details and check the updated price. Before paying, review the currency and final amount for your chosen payment method. If your card is charged through a shekel account, ask the issuer about exchange rates and fees.
After payment, wait for issuance and save the policy received by email. If there is a charge but no document, check the order status and spam folder, then contact support with the order number. Do not pay again just because the email is delayed.
Who to contact if you need treatment
For guidance from GPI, call +995 32 2 505 111. In a life-threatening emergency, call 112. Coordinate treatment with the insurer whenever possible, and keep medical documents and receipts.
Do not assume Hebrew-language medical assistance is available just because the website is in Hebrew. Ask in advance which language the service can use.
Questions from travellers from Israel
Do I have to buy insurance from a Georgian company?
Not necessarily. A policy from an authorised foreign insurer can also be suitable if it meets Georgia's requirements. Check your existing policy before buying another.
Is an insurance document written only in Hebrew enough?
The official rule requires a document in English or Georgian. Ask your insurer for the appropriate version and save it on your phone.
Does the GPI policy include flight cancellation or rescue during a trip?
Do not assume so. Medical evacuation, rescue and reimbursement for trip cancellation are different types of cover. Check each activity and risk against the policy terms; hazardous activities and unauthorised expenses may be excluded.
Can I buy after I have already arrived in Georgia?
With GPI, buying from inside Georgia involves a 24-hour wait before cover starts, within the policy dates. An event that happened before cover started is not covered retrospectively.
